For me, there’s few things better right now than watching spring arrive in my hometown: the place of my birth and coming into the world, the place of all my small and great departures, the place where all my profound and genuine dreams were born. You know, the ones that give meaning to your life, and purpose. The ones that give you unrest and make you curious. And courageous!…

All the familiar places and their fragrances, reignited again, all the hiding spots and walking paths, the hidden bench – witness to many moments of intellectual solitude and delight, all of them now seen in a new light: the one of maturity, introspection and constant renewal.

I am amazed how much the fragrance of the Earth is just as fresh and crisp as it was when I was a child, the after-the-rain air tastes just as sweet and with that, the flooding of the memories! myriads and myriads of feelings, ideas and moments, all brought back by just closing the eyes and seeing with the other senses!

Love, in all its fragile forms, is the one powerful, enduring force that brings real meaning to our everyday lives. Of course, I’m not talking about romantic, “kissy-kissy” love, although that is pretty powerful stuff in itself… But the love I mean is the fire that burns inside us all, the inner warmth that prevents our soul from freezing in the winters of despair. It’s the love of life itself. (…..)

If you ask the big questions and listen carefully to your heart, you will eventually hear destiny call you. A little voice–call it your conscience, your inner self, or your internal mother-in-law–will always tell you the truth if you are prepared to hear it. At first you may only become aware of how your life has been stuck in a rut… Then you may realize what you really want, but you just can’t quite make it happen… And when you know, or even suspect you know, what you should be doing with your life, then do it! Take a wild leap in the dark if you have to, then hit the ground running because you don’t have a second to lose… you can’t afford to throw away a single precious second. Go after your dreams with energy and passion, or you may as well stand back and watch them wash down the drain. (…)

But best of all, by doing the things that (you love most) with delight, you will inspire someone else to go after their dreams, and that, my friend, is how you change the world!

I stumbled upon this book quite randomly, at one of my friends’ houses. We were trying on wedding dresses, for I am getting married in a couple of months, after all :), and just like every other time when I am around books, the moment I see them and take them into my hands, there goes my attention: poof! into the books.

I started looking through it, mesmerized by its lovely photos and powerful messages, so well matched, that I had forgotten all about the dresses and I was even a little oblivious for a while at my dear friends’ presence.

This is not new! Every time I enter a bookshop or library, and there’s been plenty I’ve been to, I could start reading a book and succumb to it, so gracefully and peacefully, to the point of forgetting all and everything around me, for hours!… I am so content with books, that it is quite scary! Give me a good one, let me curl in bed, where is nice and warm, cup of coffee next to me and I do not need anything else/anyone else for that matter. I’ve always, always, been like this though and the passion for books and reading it’s been one of my ever constant interests, ripping in time with rewards beyond belief, never getting tiresome or bored of it.

Back to the book now: it’s a little one filled with candid animal shots and a healthy dose of inspiration! Just perfect to pass around, keep it on your kitchen counter (it’s quite small), in your kids’ bedroom or yours, to just look through any time you feel hope is just around the corner but not quite there in your life yet.

I also think that kids will love it too because is filled with animals photos making human faces and accompanied by inspirational messages. It’s also a very easy to read book. Kids are captured by the photos, while you read them positive and encouraging messages! ;) no vampires, wizards or ghosts, just simple, mundane, down to Earth animals. Not that there is anything wrong with the first, they can be quite fun, especially if you have some garlic and you safely watch them from your window (I should know, I was born in Transylvania after all!…).

It’s never too early/too late to start the quest for your life’s meaning or the courage to pursue your dreams, no matter how humble or futile you might think they are! so if you need just a little boost, once in a while, this is a nice book to keep around and have forever. You can never get bored with its message!

Are there any other little books that have changed your life for the better and still do?

Honest and candid photos of rural Romania!

I have the feeling that this way of life, still unchanged for hundreds of years, will be completely gone in 30/40 years….therefore, I was very pleased to discover Adrian Petrisor’s* photography who captures so beautifully the details of our landscape, the beauty and serenity of our mountains, the closeness with the rhythms of nature, the simple, Earth-bound life of the peasants.

Romania…oh, so much to tell about it and where to begin? A country full of contrasts, hope, despair, beauty and sadness….still growing, still adjusting to capitalism and the rapid growth of post-communist industrialization, still trying to find its identity. I am so happy I was born here! After traveling extensively and now, on the verge of settling in a different country, I come to realize all the wonderful things it taught me, how much it shaped my values, my lifestyle and how happy I am to have had the opportunity to learn, through my parents’ and grandparents’ tales, so much about our past (communism)  and through mine and my friends’ endeavors, to shape its present.

If you are curious and want to learn a bit more about my country, feel free to ask anything! :) if you want to check some stuff about it, these resources are pretty good to give you a glimpse into its tourism, politics, nature, how to, etc.

The winter is approaching. November is a quiet and still month. Perfect to retrospect and introspect. Just like this season, it’s also time for us to draw back and be still within ourselves; to be silent and calm. Nature goes back to itself to restore its powers and reborn in spring. We can use these months in the same way.

Chopins’s music (many of his nocturnes and piano sonatas) manage to convey this so beautifully. I can almost feel the stillness of nature and her calm composure in them. Peace and serenity, finally, after many months of spring and summer when all was maddeningly alive, vibrant and bursting with life. There is happiness and contentment in quietness, but of a different kind, and it has its purposes.

November it’s also bringing us closer to the end of the year: a moment to look back, with acceptance, on all that we have accomplished, have not and why, over the past months. Mostly, where do we want to stand, another year from now on. With what kind of people, feelings or accomplishments.

So, let us enjoy this beautiful piece of music, as well as all the benefits of the season! what do you love about it? :)
